We use data to provide smart advice, which causes you to avoid a lot of waste. All data of a lift is collected in the Online Lift Book (Liftmanager ®️ ). All data, maintenance, errors and repairs are directly available for the lift owner and the maintenance party that ensures an optimal lift performance at all times. Handy, right? However, we notice there’s a lot that needs to be clarified when it comes to data. We’ve been asked many questions, such as: What is data exactly used for? Where is data being stored and - the most frequently asked question - to whom does the data belong?

What is Big Data ?

In order to answer these questions, it is important for you to understand the meaning of big data. There is not a crystal clear definition of big data, but it boils down to the following: Data becomes Big Data when a lot of it is generated through different channels and it is interpreted to use it in giving advice to improve performances . Another characteristic of Big Data is that it continuously adds more data. Predictions and advice remain up-to-date and will increasingly become more accurate and reliable.

"Data is the new gold"

When the world started using and collecting data, this statement quickly surfaced everywhere. Data is gold, you have to have data to be successful. However, this statement lacks some nuance, which has led to some misunderstandings. If you compare data to gold, you probably also feel that you need to protect it. You have to be very careful with it and you should definitely not share it. And that makes people wary. The nuance that is missing here is that you cannot do anything with raw data. Of course you can keep your data all to yourself, but what are you going to do with it? Data only becomes valuable if it is interpreted , if conclusions are drawn from it. Gold is only valuable, because it helps you to afford nice things. If you couldn't buy anything with gold because nobody would take it, would you still protect it with your life? Probably not. So to make gold valuable to you, you need someone to take it and turn it into cash, or a nice new BMW, or some fancy holiday home in southern Spain. So raw data is only worth something if you have it interpreted. Raw data becomes Big Data. That’s when you can really do something with it.

Big Data in everyday life

Although Big Data still sounds a bit futuristic and complicated to many, we regularly deal with it in our daily lives. If you use Google Maps , your data is constantly being sent to Google. This way the app can keep you informed of traffic jams on your route and your ETA. Google is of no use to knowing that yóu are in that car and what brand your car is. Ultimately, the interpretation of these data is important: Are there many cars driving at low speed at the same place? There is a good chance that there is a traffic jam. That is what they help you with. This is no different with data that we use for elevator maintenance. An individual lift becomes smarter based on data from many lifts. The overall picture is important. The data from one lift only has value if it is placed in context by comparing the data with many other lifts.

Where is the data being stored?

As mentioned before your lift data is collected in the corresponding Online Lift Book (Lift Manager ®️ ). You can decide for yourself who you give access to this data. At Liftinsight ®️ we securely store your data in the (Dutch) European Google cloud. It’s protected by Google's secure infrastructure. Only a small team of developers can access our support systems in order to develop additional features of our products.

To whom does the data belong?

Although the data is collected in our platform, we look at the raw data as being nobody's property. There is no one who benefits from this raw data, which consists only of ones and zeros. So, to answer this question: The data basically doesn’t belong to anybody. The raw data is processed anonymously and aggregated by our system in order to be used for predictive maintenance. We consider this interpretation of collected raw data as intellectual property of Liftinsight ®️. However, it may not be used for resale or improper use. The data can only be used anonymously to provide smart advice. With anonymized, we mean that the data we pass on to third parties can never be traced back to one individual lift, organization or person.

Can the data be viewed at all times?

In contrast to other systems, you will always be able to view your data. Even if you switch to a new system you can make an export of the data interpreted by us and import it in your new system. We think it would be a shame if this generated data is completely lost in such cases. Would you like to know more about how the security guarantee of your data?
